The Eight New Icons in FC 25

Aya Miyama
Aya Miyama’s resilience in the face of adversity helped Japan make history at the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cupâ„¢. The “Nadeshiko” were down twice against a heavily favored United States in the final, but Miyama stepped up to keep their dreams alive. She first scored an equalizer during regular time and then provided a crucial assist to Homare Sawa with a corner kick late in extra time, leading to a penalty shootout in which Japan ultimately triumphed.

Gareth Bale
Gareth Bale’s Premier League stardom reached its zenith during the 2012-13 season with Tottenham, where he earned the Player of the Season award. That summer, a move to Real Madrid launched him to even greater heights, where he secured every major title, including 3 LaLiga championships and 5 UEFA Champions League trophies. Bale retired as Wales’ most capped player and all-time top scorer, having led The Dragons to a remarkable 4th-place finish at UEFA EURO 2016 in their debut appearance and qualifying for the 2022 FIFA World Cupâ„¢

Gianluigi Buffon
Gianluigi Buffon upheld the legacy of Italian football across three decades. The towering Tuscan first made his mark with Parma, capturing the 1998-99 UEFA Cup. A move to Juventus at the turn of the century elevated his career, where he claimed 10 Serie A titles, including a remarkable 7 consecutive championships between 2011-12 and 2017-18. His crowning achievement came in 2006 when he lifted the FIFA World Cup™, earning 2nd place in that year’s Ballon d’Or for his heroic performances with the Azzurri.

Julie Foudy
After making her international debut for the United States at just 17, Julie Foudy emerged as a standout player on a team that captivated a nation still finding its footing in football during the 1990s. Following their triumph at the inaugural FIFA Women’s World Cupâ„¢ in 1991, the USWNT clinched a dramatic second world title on home soil in 1999. The excitement surrounding the team helped lay the foundation for full professionalism in women’s football at the turn of the millennium.

Lotta Schelin
Lotta Schelin made a bold move by joining Olympique Lyonnais in the summer of 2008, at a time when French clubs had yet to challenge Europe’s elite. However, OL soon capitalized on their ambitious project, with Schelin’s relentless goal-scoring leading them to three UEFA Women’s Champions League titles and eight consecutive league championships. She retired as Sweden’s all-time top scorer, having played a key role in securing a third-place finish at the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cupâ„¢.

Lillian Thuram
Lilian Thuram penned one of the most unforgettable chapters in France’s 1998 FIFA World Cupâ„¢ triumph. With Croatia leading 1-0 in the semi-final, the tenacious defender turned the game around with a stunning brace, paving the way to the final. His exceptional performance at right-back earned him the Bronze Ball as the tournament’s third-best player. Throughout his illustrious career, Thuram also secured victories at UEFA EURO 2000 with Les Bleus, the 1998-99 UEFA Cup with Parma, and two Serie A titles with Juventus.

Marinette Pichon
In 2002, Marinette Pichon left France to join the inaugural fully professional women’s league in the United States. In her debut season with the Philadelphia Charge, she narrowly missed out on the title but outshone a strong field of local and international talent to win the MVP Award. Pichon carried this success onto the international stage, leading France to their first-ever FIFA Women’s World Cupâ„¢ appearance in 2003, where she fittingly scored Les Bleues’ first goal in the tournament.

Nadine Angerer
After achieving club success with Turbine Potsdam, Nadine Angerer made a standout debut as Germany’s starting goalkeeper at the 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cupâ„¢. She went through the tournament without conceding a single goal, including a crucial penalty save against Brazilian star Marta in the final. Her continued success with Germany, highlighted by an impressive UEFA Women’s EURO title in 2013, earned her the distinction of being the first goalkeeper, male or female, to be named FIFA World Player of the Year.
